Hollywood Hills
LOS ANGELES
The hills throughout Los Angeles are legendary for their architectural variety, both in scale and style and from every era. Here you can find palatial revival mansions in close proximity to 50’s modern post and beam houses alongside dilapidated shacks. This project’s house started out in the latter category, a complete tear down in the opinion of most, but in the end much of the existing structure was retained and reinforced by a spacious new modern addition.
The owner had spent much of her adult life living in industrial lofts and wanted to emulate that experience in the hills. The high-ceilinged box-like structure was a blank canvas to express personality through the interior design. The large window openings mimic those of the downtown lofts, only the urban skyline views are replaced here with the lush greenery of the surrounding hills.
Using darker grey interior walls helps to counterbalance the intense year-round California sunshine while also echoing the industrial concrete loft feeling. Throughout the spaces there are distinct pops of colors and contrasting warm and cool materials to invoke a sense of balance and wellbeing.
In the living room, a mixture of wabi sabi and California 70’s glamour creates a welcoming space for entertaining. Vintage 70’s chairs reupholstered in our own bespoke striped linen flank a rough oak and stainless steel coffee table. A naturally dyed linen sofa and floor-to-ceiling linen curtains add softness and subtlety, while a variety of exquisite ceramics and pottery overflow with plants and flowers to bring the nature from outside to in.
The bedrooms as well are playing constantly with dark and light and color. Curated vintage finds such as an imposing black Angelo Mangiarotti lounge chair is bathed in light alongside a deep red velvet bed, contribute to a sense of cinematic drama.
